Shatter Me by Taherah Mafi

A personal favorite of mine, Shatter Me, by Taherah Mafi, embodies everything you would want in a beloved dystopian novel. It's mysterious, enchanting, and addicting. The story centers around the seventeen-year-old protagonist, Juliette Ferrars. The Reestablishment has had Juliette locked up for two-hundred and sixty-four days now, leaving her with nothing but the ragged clothes on her back, an unedible, slop-like meal every day, and the scars all over her body from long, torturous encounters. They believe Juliette to be a murderer but do not know or want the whole story. They are perfectly content treating Juliette like a condemned prisoner with the vital information they need to take over what's left of their society. What they do not know, however, is that Juliette does not have any answers for them. She is just as lost as they are and terrified for her future as every day increases that she spends in her dark, dirty cell. As time goes on, Juliette feels as if she's losing her mind as more days of isolation continue. She spends her time staring out her tiny window, fearful of the world she sees. Diseases taking over the population, food shortages, ominous color changes in the clouds, and birds and other wildlife are absent. One day, however, Juliette gets a cellmate, and everything changes. Unsure of her feelings, she hides from the boy until the two develop a strong friendship that blossoms into something more. Will the two be able to work together and escape their captivity, or will The Reestablishment destroy the rest of what's left of their world?
